MaipúA brief history of Maipú

As with so much of the province the origin of Maipú has very strong religious foundations. Given it charter on January 9 1855 it was founded under the protection of Our Lady of Mercy, on land originally occupied by the Huarpe Indiands.

On the arrival of the Spaniards, many of the Huarpe Indians moved southwards and resettled on new land, while others remained. A new colony was founded near the River Mendoza, and the abundance of water meant that new caps could be introduced to the area, such as vineyards, olive and fruit orchards.

As a result of the ever increasing influx of immigrants during the 1880´s Maipú became one of the more important districts of the province. Viticulture flourished due to the ideal climate, fertile soils and surplus of water, the optimum conditions for a successful vineyard.
